Ultimate Frisbee Information
Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport played with a 175 gram flying ultimate disc. The object of the sport is to score points by passing the ultimate frisbee disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to an end zone in American football or rugby. Ultimate requires both athletisicm and endurance. Ultimate is a fast growing sport and comonly played on university campuses and parks world wide. Basic ultimate frisbee rules involve two teams. One team pulls the disc to the other as in a kick-off senario. Once the receiving team gains possession of ultimate frisbee disc then the ultimate frisbee players pass the disc to their teammates to advance up the ultimate field toward the end zone. The opposing ultimate team attempts to thwart the offense by intercepting the disc or (more commonly) knocking the ultimate disc to the ground during a pass. Once the ultimate frisbee disc hits the ground the possession changes. For more detailed ultimate frisbee rules see our Ultimate Frisbee Rules page.
Sometimes people refer to the sport as Ultimate Frisbee and other times you hear it just called Ultimate. The reason isn't simply to abreviate the name of sport. In fact the name of the sport is transforming from the original Ultimate Frisbee to Ultimate because of the registered trademarked name Frisbee®. Originally the sport of ultimate frisbee was invented along with the invention of the Frisbee® disc, a product manufactured by Wham-O®. At that time ultimate discs were refered to as Frisbees and the sport was refered to as ultimate frisbee. Well the Wham-O Frisbee Disc is no longer the one and only disc and therefore the sport is no longer only played with a Frisbee disc ergo the sport is no longer being called by the original disc's name. Ultimate is the new name for the sport, however the sport is still often known as ultimate frisbee and it will probably remain that way for some time.
There is often some confusion about the terms ultimate disc and ultimate frisbee disc. That is because Frisbee®, as mentioned earlier, is a regestered trademark name (a brand name if you will) when it is often assumed to be a general flying disc. Frisbee is a owned trademark of Wham-O® hence the Wham-O Ultimate Frisbee® Disc. Many people refer to ultimate discs as "frisbee discs" despite Wham-O owning the Frisbee name trademark for that disc. However the official ultimate disc of the Ultimate Players Association (UPA) is the Discraft Ultra-Star™ which introduces the phrase ultrastar frisbee. There is no such thing as an ultrastar frisbee disc nonethelesss you can understand the meaning. You could refer to the sport as ultimate frisbee and when talking about a disc say that the disc is an ultimate frisbee disc in that sense. The Ultra-Star ultimate disc is a 175 gram disc designed with great durability, excellent control and amazing distance capabilities for the ultimate or ultimate frisbee game.
Ultimate Frisbee discs are the tools with which teams use to play the game. Custom ultimate frisbee discs are often necessary for distinguishing teams' discs and/or individuals.
